MEETING IN LIEPAJA
The city at the see… It is famous not only for our popular music festival “Liepaja Amber” and other activities… Successful results have been achieved at the republican students’ language competitions, especially in English... Currently the Head of the English Teachers Methodology Group of Liepaja City is Skaidrite Kevica, who is known in Latvia also as former director of the Soros Foundation Latvia High School and University Student Debate Programme (1995 – 1998), then the executive director of p/o Debate Center (1998 – 2000), now its Board Chairperson.

Recently the regular meeting of the English Teachers Methodology Group of Liepaja City at J.Čakste Liepaja Secondary School has been somewhat unusual... It was also attended by Victoria Bulavkina – Board member of the Latvian Association of Teachers of English (LATE), and Diana Rumpite, president of the Latvian Association of Language Teachers (LALT). Victoria in her emotional and enthusiastic speech gave a closer insight into the numerous opportunities offered to LATE members as well as the basic trends in LATE’s activities. Diana in her talk stressed that joining any language teachers association means simultaneous membership of the Latvian Language Teachers Association (LALT) and the World Federation of Language Teachers (FIPLV) whose member LALT is. Such membership permits you to consider issues and problems which are relevant both to individual language teachers as well as all language teachers...

Diana also invited teachers to participate in FIPLV Nordic-Baltic region projects, Discussion Forums on LVASA website www.lvasa.lv on developing creativity, implementation of the Common European Framework in language learning, teaching and assessment, Language Portfolio, Information and Communication technologies (ICT) in Language teaching/learning and the forthcoming events, among them: LVASA seminars, VIII International creativity conference in Riga in November, LATEUM international conference in Moscow in September, the celebration of the European Day of Languages in Riga in September, the envisaged international seminar on Common European Framework and Language Portfolio in Riga in November, the seminar on an effective, rational use of computers in language teaching and taking part in international virtual networking projects (Euronet, myEurope, etc.) by the well-known Bulgarian specialist Violeta Coneva etc. (more in www.lvasa.lv) . By participating the teachers could not only learn a lot more, but also share their rich pedagogical experience...
A view was expressed that such joint meetings are necessary and useful…
