REPUBLICAN PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION OF SCHOOLCHILDREN IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES
Venue: Riga, 24 March, 2006, 11 a.m. ORGANIZERS: The Latvian Association of Language Teachers (LVASA) in co-operation with associations of Latvian, German, French, English and Russian language teachers, Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia (IZM), Public Centre for Youth Initiatives (VJIC), NGO “Debate Centre”, Educational Boards of local governments and schools of general education.
OBJECTIVES 1) to show the beauty of different languages; 2) to promote language learning, intercultural competence and value education of pupils such as principles of tolerance, mutual understanding and friendship; 3) to deepen pupils’ knowledge about the role of languages as part of the cultural environment and improve their public speaking skills; 4) to arouse pupils’ genuine interest in learning several languages.
PARTICIPANTS: Pupils of forms 8-12 from schools of general education and vocational/professional schools shall participate with their individual presentations.
PROCEDURE 1. Organization
The competition proceeds in two stages: Stage 1 – held on the district level during the 1st semester of the 2005/2006 academic year, and Stage 2 – held on the national level during the 2nd semester (spring holidays, 24th March) of the 2005/2006 academic year The participants will present their public speech individually; the themes of the speech should be chosen on the basis of personal preferences and in accordance with the motto of the competition. Depending on the participants’ individual choices, presentations may be made in the Latvian, English, Russian, German or French language.
Time of presentation – 4 minutes.
2. Criteria to be met by public speakers
Presentations of public speeches should meet the following criteria : · Formulation of the theme according to the motto · Accuracy of the structure or composition of the speech · Vividness, effectiveness and the convincing nature of the presentation · Variety and adequate use of linguistic means of expression · Adequacy of non-verbal means of expression · Bearing of the speaker and observation of etiquette · Ability of the speaker to answer questions.
For the purpose of assessment, the participants are divided into three groups: Group 1 – pupils of forms 8-9, Group 2 – pupils of forms 10-11, Group 3 – pupils of form 12.
During each of the district competitions (Stage 1), 1-2 winners should be selected from each of the three groups to participate in Stage 2, or the national level of the public speaking competition.
3. Assessment and awards
The Public Speaking Competition shall be assessed by:
3.1. Judging Committee formed at the district level for Stage 1, 3.2. Judging Committee formed by LVASA for Stage 2.
The best participants from each of the three age groups in separate languages will be awarded prizes. Prize-winners on the basis of the total score will be chosen as well. There will be also encouragement and merit awards.
