1. Objectives
Promote the student and teacher awareness and interest in the role of languages in intercultural communication
- Develop the student skills of communication in their native and other languages in expressing their identity and appreciating other languages and other identities
- Assess the public speech of students and develop teachers’ skills of assessment of public speech
2. Organizers
Latvian Association of Language Teachers (LALT) in cooperation with the Latvian, Russian, German, French, English and Italian Teachers’ associations, Ministry of Education and Science, local authorities and schools.
3. Participants
The state, private and professional school students of forms 8-12 aged 15 to 19 from Latvia and other countries.
4. Proceedings
- Organization
The Competition takes place in 2 tiers:
- tier, – at your school at the end of the year 2009 or the beginning of 2010, to select the best presenters
- tier- national level March 24, 2010. in Riga, Latvia
The student prepares a speech on the topic ‘Words are Loaded Guns’ in one of the following languages Latvian, Russian, French, English, German OR Italian, the presentation is 4 minutes long.
- Criteria of evaluation
- The speech matches the topic
- The speech is organised, it is coherent and cohesive
- The speech contents is persuasive and well argued
- The language means used are well chosen and rich
- The non-verbal means of communication are appropriate and effective
- The posture and attitude is confident and the speaker is well aware of the audience
- The student can answer the questions precisely and provide good arguments
The participant will be assessed in 3 groups
- Form 8 - 9
- Form 10 - 11
- Form 12
The school or regional winners should fill in the application form http://geo168.com/lvasa-lv/register.php by February 10, 2010, where they will be asked to upload their performance and will get the chance to assess their peers

- Assessment of the performance
The performance is assessed by:
- Tier : school commission
- Tier : LALT commission
The winners of each group will receive prizes.
- Financing
The first tier is financed by the school, the second is financed by LALT and other organizations, the transport and accommodation costs are covered by participants or their schools or local authorities
